I would like to be able to sort my To Dos by the type of record I would be hunting for - census, marriage records, land patents, etc. The end result would be that I could generate a list of just the census records I need to search for, etc.

Have you tried using the search => box to achieve this... for example:

+Census

for census records. or:

+marriage

for marriage records, etc. You can filter using any words that appear in the suggestion list. I'm not saying a "by record type" sort wouldn't be worthy, but with a sort you'll still have the entire list you'll have to deal with rather than just the portion you want. With a search, assuming you can get the right word, you'll have only what you want in the list.
