Census suggestion, census already found

I have an individual born 1896, I have entered the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census entries for the person into RootsMagic. GenSmarts gives a recommendation to search for the 1900 census for the person, even though the census entry is already found and even though the person was not head of household in 1900. The county that GenSmarts recommends to search is the exact same county where I did actually find the person.

Here's a strange thing that I can't figure out. The recommendation includes the following text:

Here is what this family might look like in 1850:

Head Of Household: Jones, Guy

                   Soundex Code: J520

Alternative Spellings: JOHNS, JANES, JONAS, JENNESS, JOHONAS, JAENS, and JOINES

                              Father Mother

Name Age Born Born Born

JONES,Guy ? TN

So in some sense, it thinks the person might have been born before 1850 and hence might have been head of household in 1900. But the recommendation also includes the following text, so GenSmarts knows when the person was really born.

Some background on Guy Alonzo Jones [7058]: He was born on 4-FEB-1896 in Lenoir City, Loudon County, Tennessee, and he died on 4-FEB-1981 in (GSEST. Loudon County, Tennessee).

GenSmarts Version 10922, VFPOBDC version 6.1.8629.1, ADO version 2.80.

Double check the following in your data:

1) Double check that person 7058 has an individual (not family) fact/event for the 1900 census. Not a source but a fact/event.

2) Double check that the file (folder and name) that you're using with GenSmarts is the same one you're looking at with RootsMagic.

If both of the above are true, then email support@gensmarts.com and we'll send you instructions on how to upload a backup of your file to enable us to help you understand why the census suggestion isn't being skipped (since it's already recorded).

One other thought... since you didn't post the entire explanation (please do, we really need everything in there to figure out how GenSmarts is interacting with your data), we can't be sure, but it's possible this isn't the "typical" census suggestion, but something more local, that might not be excluded by a previously recorded 1900 federal census find.

Let's try the complete explanation first (sorry). If that doesn't provide enough information, then I can send a file. Let me make note of a clarification. The recommendation is not to "search the 1900 census" as I first reported (at least, not exactly). Rather, the recommendation is to "Research the Roane Tennessee County Census" without explicitly listing a year. However, when you go down to the end of the recommendation, the recommended sources are in fact for books which contain only the 1900 census. That's why I was reporting that there was a recommendation to search the 1900 census. I'm still puzzled by the reference to the 1850 census for a person born in 1896.

As far as your other questions, I have verified everything -- individual census fact, not a family fact (I don't use family census facts), and the file and folder are the same between GenSmarts and RootsMagic.

Here's the complete explanation.

Researching the Roane Tennessee County Census makes sense because he was found on census in 1900 in Roane County, Tennessee and he was found on census in 1910 in Loudon County, Tennessee.

Some background on Guy Alonzo Jones [7058]: He was born on 4-FEB-1896 in Lenoir City, Loudon County, Tennessee, and he died on 4-FEB-1981 in (GSEST. Loudon County, Tennessee). He married Menta Reese (Recie) Peters [3227] on 30-AUG-1919 in Knox County, Tennessee, and had the following children: Mary 9017 and Gilbert 9016.

Here is what this family might look like in 1850:

Head Of Household: Jones, Guy

                   Soundex Code: J520

Alternative Spellings: JOHNS, JANES, JONAS, JENNESS, JOHONAS, JAENS, and JOINES

                              Father Mother

Name Age Born Born Born

JONES,Guy ? TN

This looks like a simple error in our inventory regarding the contents of this book. If we find it's something more involved we'll post back here, otherwise we'll just correct it.
