A Couple of Heritage Quest Examples

Posted April 6, 2006 12:39pm

Here are a couple of additional examples on how to have GenSmarts access Heritage Quest Online from your local library/historical society. This assumes you have the current GenSmarts version - see http://www.GenSmarts.com/versionHistory.asp for info on how to figure out which version you have and how to upgrade if you need to.

Background: When accessing Heritage Quest the first time, GenSmarts brings up an "entry" page (which you specify in the input box of the TOOLS...SETTINGS...Subscriptions tab...) and then lets you drive (navigate/type) the browser window through your library's access pages until you get into Heritage Quest itself. Depending on the setup, sometimes you'll need to initially select SEARCH CENSUS from the Heritage Quest menu yourself also. Then GenSmarts will recognize that you've completed the sign in and drive from that point forward. As long as you leave that browser window open, GenSmarts can do subsequent searches for you completely. If you close that browser window, you'll need to go through the sign in procedure again.

Here's an example for the Mid-Continent Public Library in Independence, Missouri.

..

In TOOLS...SETTINGS...Subscriptions tab, select (turn check mark on) HeritageQuest.com and enter this URL in the input box adjacent to that checkbox:

http://www.mcpl.lib.mo.us/reference/remote.cfm?id=117

After log in, you'll have to click on the CONNECT: HERITAGE QUEST link that comes up, and then from the Heritage Quest menu select SEARCH CENSUS. At that point, GenSmarts will drive for you. You only have to do this once each session - if you leave the browser window open, GenSmarts will reuse it for future searches and you won't have to type or select anything.

Here's another example for the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort, Kentucky:

Use the same process as in the Mid-Continent example except use this for the URL in that input box:

http://history.ky.gov/Research/Library/new_dbs.htm

On your first request for a lookup from GenSmarts, the URL above will come up and you'll have to click on the CLICK HERE to get the dialog box to come up where you enter you card number. Again, from the main menu of Heritage Quest select SEARCH CENSUS and then GenSmarts will kick in and drive. Leave the browser window open for subsequent searches and you won't have to log in again.
