Other Ancestry.com Databases

I think this is my first post. Have been using GenSmarts for about 3 months. I searched the training and archives ... but didn't find answers to my questions. Sorry if this has already been covered.

I subscribe to Ancestry.com and have that set up on Gen Smarts. So far, no issues in accessing.

My question: Why doesn't GenSmarts access all of the other Ancestry databases, such as obits, immigration records and the like ... other than birth, some census, marriage, and some death-related ?

For example, I am working with many individuals that immigrated from Germany. Male #1 was born in Germany in 1795. Male #1 is the father of Male #2 who was born in Germany in 1838. They first appear in the US census in 1860 along with the mother Female #1, also born in Germany and another son Male #3 also born in Germany. I've entered the date and place of death for all of the above 4 people.

Male #2 and Male #3, the sons of the immigrant family, marry and have children that were born and died anywhere between about 1865-1975 in the US.

-I had not yet entered the immigration data into RootsMagic, my genealogy software.

1) Why doesn't GenSmarts create a todo for the immigration data ... then direct me to ancestry.com?

2) Why doesn't Gensmarts create a todo for Ancestry's obits, newspaper databases?

3) Why doesn't GenSmarts ever ask for the spouses's census records from the date of birth to the date of marriage ... and create a todo for Ancestry.com?

Am I doing something wrong or doesn't GenSmarts create todo's for these types of facts / events?

Will they be doing this in the future?

*** This should be posted in the wish-list section.

Please consider adding Rutherford B. Hayes online Obit (and funeral card) index. I think the url is rbhayes.org ... then go to the obit index link.

Thanks,

Becky

Why doesn't GenSmarts

We just haven't gotten 'round to inventorying those Ancestry.com databases yet...

OK. Fine.

One more question. About when will these ancestry.com databases be included in the inventory? 2006? 2007? later?

Second question. Where can I find a list of all of your "inventory" ... databases, websites, whatever that GenSmarts will use in their "todo" lists, places for me to look.

-If I know where you look ... I can figure out where I need to look outside of GenSmarts.

Please forgive me. I don't really know the history of your software development. IMHO, GenSmarts is an amazing tool. I don't have any complaints about you have done and what you are doing. Just want to understand what your software does, and what it doesn't do.

Thank you, very much,

Becky

There's an enhancement planned for later in the year that will let you look at the inventory. There isn't a specific timetable for when the Ancestry.com databases you're referring to will be added.

I have just ordered GenSmarts from Ancestry (the myfamily.com version) and can't wait for it to arrive.

I believe that ancestry.co.uk is linked, but what about ancestry.ca?

I have been using a demo version and think I am going to enjoy using the registered product.

Thanks

Mike

You'll get routed to ancestry.com for Canadian census items that are in GenSmarts inventory - there's no separate option yet to let you change the routing as there is for Ancestry.co.uk

Your Ancestry.ca id/login should work ok on Ancestry.com, though, and let you access the same things you can get to from Ancestry.ca, so this should be a minor issue.

When I set up GenSmarts, I did not add all of the on-line subscriptions that I have. How can I go back and add them?

Almost a year later--is there any update to adding all of the Ancestry.com databases?

We do minor updates all the time.

We've done 2 or 3 complete re-inventories Ancestry.com's holdings since 2004. We're probably about due for another.

We'll never have all their databases - as it will evolve between our updates, our inventory techniques aren't 100% accurate, and not all of their databases will be appropriate for GenSmarts suggestions.

Any idea when you will re-inventory Ancestry?

No, we don't have anything scheduled yet. We will be starting another round of inventory updates this summer, but I haven't decided yet where an Ancestry.com re-inventory is going to fall priority wise vs. adding new databases.

Anything happening with Ancestry re-inventory?

On 2007-10-31 11:38pm GenSmarts replied...

There's an update that's wrapping up currently that has a couple of additional pay sites in it. That should be released in the next couple of weeks. An ancestry.com update will likely be the next db update we start on after that.
